Unity versus diversity

So far the emphasis has been on the application of the principle of chaos

pattern to the wider urban milieu. It also has relevance to the design of indi-

vidual buildings involving the expression of the parts in tension with the

unity of the whole. I have still not discovered a better illustration of the situ-

ation than a comparison between two cathedrals: Lincoln and Notre Dame,

Paris (Figure 38).
