ABSTRACT

It should be now obvious that during the period 1918-45 there was no clear narrative of bodies and minds, but rather that these years were marked by contradictions and tensions which only began to be harmonized towards the end of the war. Similarly, the dualism of children as victims and threats existed in a domain of reality which was also marked by contradiction and tension as policy makers and reformers strove to arrive at new understandings based on the recognition of a more complex body-mind unity. By way of drawing out several of the principal themes of the period, let us begin with an assessment of the School Medical Service between 1918 and 1939.
