ABSTRACT

The largest number of urban open spaces discussed in this section of the book fall into the third category of civic urban open spaces. This does not necessarily mean that because this section has the largest number of types of spaces these are the most important or valued by either individuals or communities. It may well be that domestic and neighbourhood urban open spaces are more valued than civic ones, but this is a question that research has not yet sought to answer The open spaces within this group naturally fall into the separate groupings of commercial, health and education, transport and recreational, so this chapter is divided up to discuss the spaces in this order.
