ABSTRACT

The second case study explores the conservation culture of a local planning authority but this time in the context of a historic market town. (The background to the case studies is given in the introduction to chapter 5.) Two different urban contexts were chosen in order to investigate whether the nature of the historic environment notably affects perceptions of the value, or contribution, of conservation in planning. A shire market town was chosen to represent the type of place that more actively promotes its historic identity, its image being more synonymous with that of the archetypal conservation town.
