ABSTRACT

Auxiliary retrieval devices are those varied tools which generally exist independently of the thesaurus vocabulary itself. It should be noted, however, that some of these, particularly role indicators, are often described as a part of the thesaurus proper; indeed it may be difficult to decide, and may be a matter of opinion, whether devices of this sort form a part of a thesaurus or not. They should, nonetheless, be distinguished from devices such as specificity and use of compound terms, which are unarguably an integral part of the vocabulary, and which are described elsewhere in this book.
