ABSTRACT
Previously a part of West Java (Jawa Barat), the Province of Banten was officially declared a separate territory in October 2000. It is located at the western end of the island of Java and was named for the old port city and sultanate of Banten (Bantam), on the Bay of Banten on the north coast. The area of Banten is 9,660 sq km, making it one of the smaller provinces.
