ABSTRACT

The Province of East Java (Jawa Timur) is located, as its name suggests, in the easternmost part of Java. It includes the island of Madura and several smaller islands. The province covers an area of 47,800 sq km (2.5% of the total Indonesian land area, but with 16% of the population), of which 90% is in Java and the remaining 10% Madura, Bawean and other outlying islands. The province is bounded by water on three sides: the Java Sea to the north, the Indian Ocean to the south and the Bali Strait to the east. Central Java (Jawa Tengah) province lies to the west.
