ABSTRACT

The Special Capital District of Jakarta (Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta—DKI Jakarta) is situated on a swampy plain emanating from the Ciliwung river on the north-west coast of Java, straddling the provinces of Banten to the west and West Java (Jawa Barat) to the east and south. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and, owing to its population and importance, has been granted a special administrative status, equivalent to that of a province. Jakarta covers a total area of approximately 664 sq km (256 sq miles), 0.03% of the total area of Indonesia, making it the smallest provincial-status administrative unit in the country. Only five provinces, however, have greater populations (the other provinces of Java, save Yogyakarta, and North Sumatra—Sumatera Utara).
