ABSTRACT
The Special District (Daerah Istimewa) of Yogyakarta is situated in the central, southern part of Java island. The territory is often referred to by its acronym, DIY, while other names in daily use include Yogya, Jogjakarta, Jogja, etc. In a unique arrangement instituted in the early years of independence, the Sultan of Yogyakarta has ex officio been the Governor of the DIY. The formal Javanese name of the region is Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.
