ABSTRACT

The Province of East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur) is often known by the acronym Kaltim. The province is located on the eastern side of the island of Borneo (known as Kalimantan in Indonesia), with international land borders with the Malaysian states of Sabah to the north and, beyond the great watershed of the Iban mountain range, of Sarawak to the west. The Indonesian provinces of South Kalimantan (Kalimantan Selatan) and Central Kalimantan (Kalimantan Tengah) lie in the south and south-west, respectively. The centre of the province juts eastwards into the Celebes (Sulawesi) Sea, to the north-east, the island of Borneo culminating in the promontory of Tanjung Mangkalihat, standing at the head of the Makassar Strait, which washes the province’s south-eastern shores. The Indonesian island of Sulawesi lies across the Strait.
