ABSTRACT

The Province of Bali is the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands and consists mainly of the island of Bali, which measures 153 km from east to west and 112 km along the north–south axis. It lies south of the Equator and is only 3.2 km east of Java, across the Bali Strait. On the other side of the Bali Strait, to the west, is East Java (Jawa Timur), to the north the Java, Bali and Flores Seas, and to the south the Indian Ocean. East, beyond the deep Lombok Strait, is East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur), specifically the island of Lombok. The Lombok Strait forms part of the ‘Wallace Line’, an important natural division—Bali, to the west, is home to Asian flora and fauna, while Lombok, to the east, has more Australasian flora and fauna.
