ABSTRACT

The Province of East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur, sometimes known by the acronym NTT) consists of approximately 550 islands, the main ones being Timor (the Indonesian part of the island is known as Timor Barat or West Timor), Flores and Sumba. East Nusa Tenggara has an eastern international land border on Timor with Timor-Leste, which was known as East Timor (Timor Timur) during Indonesian rule in 1975–2002. An enclave of Timor-Leste lies on the northern coast of Timor, within the territory of East Nusa Tenggara. Further east, beyond the islands of Timor and Alor, is Maluku province. The Flores Sea is north of East Nusa Tenggara, separating Flores from the Indonesian island of Celebes (Sulawesi), while the Indian Ocean and the Timor Sea lie between the province and Australia (some 500 km to the south-east of Rote island). To the west is West Nusa Tenggara province—Komodo and the small islands at the western end of Flores are separated from the western province by the Sape Strait. The main islands of East Nusa Tenggara enclose the Savu (or Sawu) Sea.
