ABSTRACT

The Province of South-East Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tenggara) lies on the southeastern peninsula of Sulawesi island and some surrounding islands. This province is one of the most remote regions of Sulawesi; no highway connects it to the cities on the rest of the island, so the primary transportation link is a ferry across the Gulf of Bone (Bone Bay) between Watampone (Bone) in South Sulawesi (Sulawesi Selatan) and the port of Kolaka. The total area of the peninsula and the islands of the province is 38,067 sq km, with its sea area covering about 110,000 sq km. The northern border crosses the neck of the peninsula, with South Sulawesi to the north-west (and west, across the Gulf of Bone) and Central Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah) to the north-east. East is the Moluccan (Maluku) Sea, south-east the Banda Sea, south the Flores Sea and west the Gulf of Bone.
