ABSTRACT
In 1991 five sovereign Central Asian republics emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The story of how the former Soviet republics originated and were transformed into sovereign entities is the subject of this chapter. It is easy to forget the short time-span between the creation of a republic and its gaining independence, and we must keep in mind that upon independence an average of barely 60 years had gone by since these countries’ creation as republics.
