ABSTRACT
The United States has always been a mobile society, geographically and socially. These two aspects of mobility have been closely connected as settlers have moved within America primarily in search of a better standard of living and future for themselves and their families. In 1992-93 16 per cent of Americans moved house, with 3 per cent settling in a new state. Mobility was greatest in the West (20 per cent) and the South (18 per cent) and least in the North-East (11 per cent) and Midwest (16 per cent).13 However, the 2000 census showed that over two-thirds of Americans still lived in the state in which they were born.
