ABSTRACT
The WARSAW PACT was the name of the Cold War alliance of Eastern European countries led by the USSR that regarded itself as a mutual defence organization against the ambitions of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It derived its name from the Warsaw Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance that was signed by the USSR, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania in May 1955. The Warsaw Pact was dissolved in 1991 following the fragmentation of the USSR.
