ABSTRACT

Moderate right-wing party founded by Fernando Belaúnde Terry to contest the presidential election of 1980, which he won with 44.5% of the votes cast. His ineffectiveness in combating the threat posed by Sendero Luminoso led to his defeat by Alan García of the Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana in 1985. In the 2001 presidential election the party did not field a candidate and won only three seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
