The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is an organ of the Organization of American States (OAS), created to promote the observance and defence of human rights and to serve as consultative organ of the organization. It derives its powers from the Statute of the IACHR approved by the OAS General Assembly at its ninth regular session, held in La Paz, Bolivia, in October 1979. These powers include the right and, indeed, the duty to bring cases before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
