ABSTRACT

GAMALIEL (3-60): Prominent and respected teacher of the Law, Gamaliel the Elder, a grandson of Hillel, was leader of the Sanhedrin, the highest court in Jerusalem. One of his students was St. Paul the Apostle. Gamaliel was one of the principals in the Pharisee (which means “the Separated Ones”) party. According to Acts 5:34, he favored leniency toward the Christians, arguing that if things were allowed to take their course, and persecution not imposed, they would soon find out if the work were “of God” or “of men.”
