LAMA: “Superior,” or by derivation, “spiritual teacher,” equivalent to guru. Not every monk is a Lama, because the term is properly reserved for a Tibetan or Mongolian monk (or layman) who is deeply learned in Buddhist doctrine or Tantric practices. Incarnate Lamas are called Tulkus.
