ABSTRACT

In the previous two chapters we have accepted unquestioned the distinctive feature system of SPE. However, the autosegmentalisation of features proposed for, e.g. vowel harmony in Turkish or lateral dissimilation in Latin already hints at innovations in this area, to which we now turn. We will see that change has affected in varying degrees all aspects of the SPE system: number of features, identity of the features, relations between features, and feature valency.
