ABSTRACT
As explained in Chapter 1, SPE representations exclusively consist of strings of distinctive feature matrices. Such matrices define segments or boundaries, the latter derived directly from the (morpho)syntax. No further phonological structure, such as that embodied in syllables or in the higher prosodic units to be examined in this and the next chapter, was countenanced by Chomsky and Halle.
