ABSTRACT
From retributivism to utilitarianism As we have seen, retributive or backward-looking justifications of punishment reflect values that are in many ways fundamental to how we view the world. Life shared with others is something most of us value. Yet it carries with it significant burdens. For example, living together requires respect for basic values. It seems seriously unfair when those who respect those values end up worse off than those who do not.
