ABSTRACT
This chapter traces the broad outlines of migration flows to France, official policy and political debate on immigration and aspects of racism and anti-racism in the post-war period. It does not attempt an exhaustive coverage of these areas (see, for example, Wihtol de Wenden 1988a). It is intended to provide the general political context for the following chapters.
