ABSTRACT

The difficulties of translating a writer like Hélène Cixous are immense. No translation is ever faithful, since the translating language will inevitably erase, add to or alter the meanings of the original, a process that becomes especially significant in the case of a writer like Cixous who actively incorporates the possibilities generated by language into her text. The translator is forced to obliterate, invent, distort, producing a version of the original which, except for the recourse of an occasional note, renders all such transactions invisible.
