ABSTRACT

To a significant degree, the development and application of industrial techniques determines many aspects of contemporary life including, of course, architecture. As the eminent engineer Peter Rice stated: ‘Everything we design will eventually be made, assembled and erected by industry… This is true of all aspects of modern life. To talk of the power of industry is to talk of life in the late twentieth century itself.’ 1 Industrial methods such as manufacturing processes, materials research and product development strategies, in both past and current practice, have particular relevance to portable architecture because they are especially relevant to the application of new design approaches and solutions.
