ABSTRACT
Raising a child to adulthood requires a significant expenditure of time as well as money. Expenditures on little Betty and Bobby represent investments in the future. If time and money devoted to children are not well spent, there are large negative consequences for society. In recent years, the care and well-being of children has become the focus of increased community concern in Australia (Cashmore 2001).
