ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the way that current and future developments, particularly technological ones, are likely to affect rural guerrilla warfare. The technological trends and developments were discussed in Part II (Chapters 3–8), and their effect on urban terrorism will be assessed in Chapter 17, in the light of urban political and tactical factors in Chapters 15 and 16. Where the effects on rural and urban terrorism are relatively similar (e.g. in certain weapons, access and perimeter protection and search techniques) these will be deferred to Chapter 17 with only a brief reference in this chapter as it is better to go into detail only once, in the light of both rural and urban factors. This chapter will therefore attempt only to highlight the effects peculiar to rural conflict, on both terrorist and security force tactics and techniques.
