ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the peripheral regions of western Europe, such as the Mediterranean:
Viewed in terms of relative economic and political power, Europe has a strong centre and a marginal periphery. If its prosperous core lies under the smog of the Ruhr, its underdeveloped periphery is washed by the Mediterranean.
