ABSTRACT
Maurice Merleau-Ponty was born on 14 March 1908 at Rochefort sur Mer (Charente Maritime). His father was killed in action in the First World War and he remained very close to his mother until her death in 1952. Despite his early bereavement he described his childhood as ‘incomparable’.
