ABSTRACT

Syntagmatic theory relates to linguistics especially when linguistics concerns itself with syntax. For the rules of syntax and syntagmatic processing operate over similar territory; and the study of similar territory tends to produce similar results-or, at the very least, mutually illuminating results. In this chapter, I shall be trying to come to grips with Generative grammar, as the domi0t movement in linguistics over the past thirty years, and the movement most responsible for bringing syntax forward into the limelight.
