ABSTRACT

The discussions on urban thermal comfort in the previous chapter brought home the crucial differences between indoor and outdoor comforts. Essentially, these boil down to two features: excessive direct and diffuse radiation that make the basic assumption of indoor comfort models (Ta = TMRT) untenable, and urban air movement patterns which are hard to predict yet significantly influence outdoor comfort. We further learnt that shading is the key to tropical urban thermal comfort; but this requirement ought to be augmented by the promotion of urban wind flow, however difficult it may be.
