ABSTRACT

The word “enterprise” has to do with the skills of initiation, imagination, creativity, being able to organize, make decisions and take control in a wide variety of contexts (OECD, 1989). These are qualities which have always been of vital importance in building the economy. The pre-industrial agricultural age was built on a foundation of local enterprise in marketing commodities, goods and services. In the twentieth century, the economic focus shifted to manufacturing and resource industries to generate wealth and employment in our increasingly urbanized societies.
