ABSTRACT

Once the thesis has been formally submitted, this will trigger the procedures for examination, starting with the appointment of examiners. The latter may include the advisory committee plus one or more other examiners internal to the institution (as in many institutions in the United States) or a mixture of internal and external examiners (which is the norm elsewhere), and they may, or may not, include the supervisor. But, irrespective of whether the latter are examiners or not, as the subject specialists they can expect to be consulted about whom it would be most appropriate to approach to act as examiners.
