ABSTRACT
This book has attempted to provoke debate, rouse strong feeling and draw a response. To achieve this it has asked some important questions. We have challenged the notion of scholarship as it is currently understood, because the current understanding provides no foundation for answers to questions that are of fundamental importance to the future of higher education. Without these answers there is little optimism for the future of scholarship within the higher-education community. Fragmentation will increase and academics will barricade themselves on ever-shrinking islands of knowledge. But there is another way. Scholarship has been within the academy since its inception and there it should remain.
