ABSTRACT
Why do we assess pupils? Is assessment the same as testing? What are the main forms of assessment? How accurate are they? This chapter offers an overview of assessment, including the compulsory forms of assessment in mathematics curricula from Key Stage 1 to Advanced-level. Item types and test characteristics such as validity and reliability are also discussed in the context of defining what is being assessed in a test.
