ABSTRACT

An analysis can be provided of the financial performance of existing activities to identify the level of surplus/deficit being generated by each activity. At a basic level this would involve identifying the overall performance of individual departments and within that the separate financial performance of teaching, research and other activities. Beyond this an analysis might be provided of the financial performance of individual courses and research projects. Such an analysis will enable the HEI to see the levels of cross-subsidy within its existing portfolio of activities and to plan accordingly for the future. Comparisons can be made of the costs of undertaking various activities in the HEI compared to other HEIs or other organisations. The technique of benchmarking, which is discussed below, will facilitate this task.
