ABSTRACT

Notes additional to the main body of the text should be avoided whenever possible. It can be argued that if a note is important enough to be added, it is important enough to be included in the main text, perhaps in parentheses. Some examiners are particularly irritated by the use of notes. However, notes are sometimes encountered in dissertations and can be presented in three ways: 1 2 3 as footnotes relating to matters on a particular page; or. chapter notes relating to matters in each chapter; or.. dissertation notes referring to matters throughout the whole main body of the text. Notes are used for various purposes but, principally, they are intended to provide additional information at particular points without interrupting the main flow of the text. However, notes should be avoided unless they are felt to be essential as, more often than not, they defeat their own purpose.
