ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look at the organization in which the learning takes place. We know that in any organization, those who are committed to change and innovation are not always successful no matter how well argued their goals and strategies may be or how much energy they expend. In addition, we know that unless there is some kind of cultural change in an organization, which affects the existing structural or fanctional arrangements, or both, then it is unlikely that efforts by a few to change the goals and outcomes will be successful. So we faced a decision on what we should say about the university as an organization. There are many books about organizational change, some about universities in particular, and we did not feel we could or should try to emulate them. What we decided to do was to follow the theme of this whole book and look at the organization from the point of view of learning. Hence our title for this chapter, ‘Organizing learning’.
