ABSTRACT
Edmund Gosse sent Hardy a copy of a limited edition of Donne’s poems (New York, 1905) as a present for his birthday, 2 June 1908. Hardy acknowledged the gift in a brief letter dated 24 July 1908 (The Collected Letters of Thomas Hardy, ed.R. L.Purdy and M.Millgate, vol. III, 1982, p. 326).
