ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we’ve spent some time opening up issues relating to lecturing and exploring a range of definitions of lecturing. Here we will look more closely at the historical background of lecturing, touching briefly on learning theories, and then discuss some of the environmental factors which impact on lecturing, factors over which the individual lecturer has little or no control. The link in this chapter between the historical background, theoretical approaches and the physical location of lecturing is inevitable if we wish to deconstruct a series of implications seemingly inherent in the process of lecturing.
