ABSTRACT
Democratic leadership is particularly important in relation to citizenship education, which specifically encourages democratic participation across the school. Students, when in school, are both learners and members (citizens) of the school community. In both roles they need to develop the experience and skills of leadership. The nature and quality of the leadership that is modelled by the headteacher and staff will significantly affect the way in which students understand and develop their own contributions to the life of the school.
