ABSTRACT
One of the things which inexperienced surveyors find most difficult is setting up an instrument (a total station or theodolite) on its tripod over a ground mark, most commonly a wooden peg in archaeological usage. This is in fact quite simple, but if the correct procedure isn’t followed great difficulty may be encountered.
