ABSTRACT

The other countries of the Empire shared a pre-1918 history with Austria: Romania and Bulgaria, also discussed below, had based their currency on the Latin Monetary Union system.

Hungary declared itself a republic on 16 November 1918, but the first Karolyi government was overthrown by Bolsheviks in March 1919. They in turn were overthrown by a Romanian army, and the Horthy government was established in August 1919.
