ABSTRACT

Having explored the SHRM function and the generic approaches to managing it used by construction organisations, we now proceed to explore the day-to-day operational aspects of the function. These aspects are referred to as the mechanics of SHRM – the range of processes and operations that allow the organisation to manage and develop their workforce in a way which supports their SHRM goals. We will discuss these processes under three broad headings: employee resourcing, human resource development (HRD) and reward management. Under these headings we will explore how an organisation can manage these interrelated processes effectively and how information technology can be used to facilitate the integration of strategic and operational SHRM goals. Their importance cannot be overstated. Without effective management an organisation will be unable to attract, develop and retain the people that will enable it to achieve its strategic objectives.
