ABSTRACT
Discussing this text and how to translate it will immediately highlight certain features: the regionalisms, the colloquialisms, the grammar and spelling, and the cheery tone. It is, in fact, an excellent example of one the most difficult aspects of 'meaning', namely the appreciation not of referential messages, but of characteristics in the way the message is expressed that voluntarily or involuntarily reveal information about the speaker or writer. These stylistically conveyed meanings are connotations: they share with the types of connotation discussed in Chapter 8 the character of meanings 'read between the lines' on the basis of associations that are widespread, although not enshrined in the dictionary.
