ABSTRACT

The next four chapters will be devoted to a selection of topics from the 'contrastive linguistics' of French and English. Each of these topics is selfcontained, and can be used at whatever stage of the course it seems most useful. The aim of including these topics is to sharpen students' awareness of certain characteristic difficulties in translating grammatical structures of French into English, and their awareness of the full range of options open to them in translating these structures.
