ABSTRACT

While earlier chapters have focused upon key phases and methods in the conduct of field research, this chapter returns to consider the whole of the research process. A series of common ethical and political problems are involved in research sponsorship, research relations, data collection, data analysis and data dissemination and it is to these that we now turn. The chapter begins by identifying ethical issues that have arisen in empirical research, after which we turn to examine the attempts that have been made to handle these issues by professional associations. Finally, we consider the extent to which ethical problems cart be handled in the practice of field research.
