ABSTRACT
Technical education in Britain has a history spanning almost 200 years, although the rate of its development during that time has been uneven. The growth of the factory system produced a desire towards the end of the eighteenth century for greater technical knowledge and skill at all levels of society. Individual initiatives to meet this need led to the foundation of a number of institutions which were the forerunners of the nineteenth-century Mechanics Institute Movement.
