ABSTRACT
Whereas experienced teachers in permanent posts and student teachers on teaching practice usually have several weeks during which to get to know their new classes, establish and fine-tune relationships and rules of behaviour, and decide which subjects and topics to teach at what time, many supply teachers have little opportunity to operate in stable conditions over a lengthy period of time with the same class.
